Animal Intelligence Hierarchy focuses on the ladder of preferences of different species of animals created by scientists on the basis of their intelligence or smartness. Animal Intelligence is also referred as Animal Cognition in scientific terms and the study of checking of Animal Intelligence Hierarchy is scientifically referred as Cognitive Ethnology.

The Animal Intelligence Hierarchy was obtained by scientists by studying their behavior in extreme ablaze form. The various tests performed to obtain Animal Intelligence Hierarchy structure include like the use of tools, problem solving skills, ability to understand and learn languages, spatial memory usage for various purposes, display of emotions and consciousness etc. The basic ranking of animals on the basis of the intelligence they exhibit i. For this purpose it is a more refined measurement than the raw brain-to-body mass ratioas it takes into account allometric effects. Expressed as a formula, the relationship has been developed for mammals and may not yield relevant results when applied outside this group. Encephalization quotient was developed in an attempt to provide a way of correlating an animal's physical characteristics with perceived intelligence. It improved on the previous attempt, brain-to-body mass ratioso it has persisted.

Subsequent work, notably Roth, [1] found EQ to be flawed and suggested brain size was a better predictor, but that has problems as well. Currently the best predictor for intelligence across all animals is forebrain neuron count.

This was not seen earlier because neuron counts were previously inaccurate for most animals. For example, human brain neuron count was given as billion for decades before Herculano-Houzel [15] [16] found a more reliable method of counting brain cells.

It could have been anticipated that EQ might be superseded because of both the number of exceptions and the growing complexity of the formulae it used. See the rest of this article. The simplicity of counting neurons has replaced it.

The concept in EQ of comparing the brain capacity exceeding that required for body sense and motor activity may yet live on to provide an even better prediction of intelligence, but that work has not been done yet. The distance of a species from the regression line is a measure of its encephalization Finlay, Encephalization is a characteristic of a species.

Rules for brain size relates to the number brain neurons have varied in evolution, then not all mammalian brains are necessarily built as larger or smaller versions of a same plan, with proportionately larger or smaller numbers of neurons.

Similarly sized brains, such as a cow or chimpanzee, might in that scenario contain very different numbers of neurons, just as a very large cetacean brain might contain fewer neurons than a gorilla brain. Size comparison between the human brain and non-primate brains, larger or smaller, might simply be inadequate and uninformative — and our view of the human brain as outlier, a special oddity, may have been based on the mistaken assumption that all brains are made the same Herculano-Houzel, There is a distinction between brain parts that are necessary for the maintenance of the body and those that are associated with improved cognitive functions.

These brain parts, although functionally different, all contribute to the overall weight of the brain. Jerison for this reason, has considered 'extra neurons', neurons that contribute strictly to cognitive capacities, as more important indicators of intelligence than pure EQ. Gibson et al. Factors, such as the recent evolution of the cerebral cortex and different degrees of brain folding gyrificationwhich increases the surface area and volume of the cortex, are positively correlated to intelligence in humans.

In a meta-analysis, Deaner et al. They have found that, after normalization, only ABS and neocortex size showed significant correlation to cognitive abilities.

In primates, ABS, neocortex size, and N c the number of cortical neurons correlated fairly well with cognitive abilities. However, there were inconsistencies found for N c. According to the authors, these inconsistencies were the result of the faulty assumption that N c increases linearly with the size of the cortical surface. This notion is incorrect because the assumption does not take into account the variability in cortical thickness and cortical neuron density, which should influence N c.Which country has the highest IQ?

What is the average IQ of your country? Here is the average IQ of more than 80 countries. Richard and Tatu argues that differences in national income are correlated with differences in the average national intelligence quotient IQ. They further argue that differences in average national IQs constitute one important factor, but not the only one, contributing to differences in national wealth and rates of economic growth. These results are controversial and have caused much debate, they must be interpreted with extreme caution.

Solomon Islands.List of the world's smartest animals, in order of their animal intelligence ranking. When putting this list of the smartest animals in the world together, I had to give myself criteria to follow. A complex brain is not a factor so much as the ability to use creative thinking. Sure, these are my own standards, and some might complain that this list is decidedly anthropomorphic— seeing as how I'm judging these smart animals by obvious human criteria.

For example, why should creative thinking mean one animal is smarter than another animal that can remember the location of 2, individual nuts it buried over 2 years? That's just how I decided to do it. To me, creative thinking makes an animal smart, not memorization. I couldn't limit myself to a list of just the top 10 smartest animals because that would have eliminated some incredibly smart and creative creatures.

Orangutans are now considered to be the smartest of the primates, over chimps. Orangutans have been taught to saw wood, use a hammer to nail structures together and even siphon liquids through a hose. But while that could be simply marked up to rote training, what makes the orangutan smart is its ability to understand why we complete these actions and use them in the wild when they might be helpful.

For example, an orangutan was taught how to build a simple protective structure using tools available in the wild. When released from captivity, the orangutan was observed building the same structure to get out of the rain. Bottlenose dolphins possess advanced language comprehension skills, making them able to understand signed gestures, generalized words like "ball," and can also refer to sets of objects with similar characteristics.

They get numerical concepts, and they're able to understand and react to questions about objects outside of their immediate vicinity. They process information received both acoustically and visually, allowing them to recognize scenes presented on a television screen something chimps must be trained to do.

Dolphins understand pointing like dogs — something else chimps have a hard time with. Considering dolphins don't have arms, this ability is perhaps all the more amazing. Dolphins also seem to demonstrate self-awareness by using mirrors to recognize and inspect marks placed inconspicuously on their bodies like elephants. Chimpanzees learn, perform cognitive and creative tasks, and have a better memory than any other animal.

They can perform sign language to communicate with humans.

Top 10 Most Intelligent Animals

Chimps have been observed using advanced knowledge of tools— building what they need from what they have in creative and adaptive ways. They have shown ability in thinking ahead by using tactical attack maneuvers, such as flanking their prey. They often use mental manipulation within their families. Recently, chimpanzees have been seen teaching sign language to their infants without human interference.

Elephants are incredibly intelligent. They have incredibly large brains, even when compared to scale with human brains, the elephant brain dwarfs the brains of most other mammals. They have created some of the most complicated social structures in the animal kingdom.

One indication of intelligence is altruism or an animal's sacrifice for the good of the whole herd. Elephants are famous for their altruism in protecting their young, and this is only one of the many characteristics that make them amazingly intelligent. Elephants have been known to medicate themselves when sick by chewing the leaves of specific trees depending on their illness.Elephants No matter how you view it, we are not the only intelligent animals.

While the lower chart with BLUE skew, is more exact in proportion, the Green skew on the top chart seems to represent a natural pattern in nature. If Brain to Body Ratio is the prime factor in intelligence and using the exact Blue skewthen a mole has humanity beat If Brain Size is the prime factor, then Elephants and Whales have us beat Having an Advantage over other animals does not mean that we are smarter, and it does not mean that we are not an animal ourselves.

Certainly it does not mean that we are the only creatures with feelings, intellect, emotions, and the will to live. Eliminating or enslaving other creatures does not help our existence. In fact, the Mayo Clinic says that eating little or no meat decreases your chances of heart disease and many forms of cancer both dairy products and meat products, are "Acidic pH Reactive" as per "The pH Miracle" by Young and Young. GOD: God made us just like him thus we are nearly Gods ourselvesand God has provided all other creatures for us to eat or dispose, and has created all of nature for us to violate.

This God, with a white beard who sits on a throne in the clouds, watches you be good in church, but does not follow as you dance in sin in Studio 54 in Las Vegas, nor does he observe you loosing your money in those "Flaming 7" slot machines. But who has God spoken to directly?

Someone who ate some mushrooms? But perhaps someone lied along the way, or perhaps someone misunderstood, or perhaps God is too angry to talk with anyone anymore, because they have taken his good words and twisted them to their own conveniency.

Maybe God made animals like God made us. Perhaps God loves animals just like he she? I question our ethics. Still, no man is an island, and you cant fight city hall, if that is what everyone believes, then so be it, but you wont catch me eating animals, nor consuming or using animal products or byproducts except for certain prescription pills with trace amounts of dairyanymore, ever again.

I even have shoes that look like leather but are not. And hopefully God will reward me for being ethical and treating all of his creatures nicely except cockroaches. Pardon me, I didn't mean to get carried away, back to the chart data Orangutans are not listed on the chart, but they are quite intelligent. I would guess that they are probably more so than Gorillas, but I used to guess that Orangutans are our nearest relative, but recently read that Chimps are then Gorillas next.

We did not descend from them, but we both descended from a common, now extinct ancestor as per the field of Anthropology. One way or the other, all of the most intelligent animals as well as all other animals have been abused by mankind.

Man is the most dangerous animal on the list, we pollute the sea, we pollute the land, we cover the earth, killing everything else. Its time we learned to COEXIST in Harmony with the other animals as well as our selvesand the best way to do that is to live on a vegetarian Vegan diet including mandatory B Vitamin supplementsusing Soy for protein which we will have to do anyway, if the population continues to grow, as you can feed 17 times as many people per acreage with Soy protein than with a meat based diet.In a column posted a few days ago November 1 I mentioned that my friend John Evans, a Cambridge England mathematician, has developed a general formula for estimating biocomplexity.

It is quite simple, using only two variables: the number of units in a system, and the number of connections interactions each unit has with other units in the system.

An IQ test for animals?

The concept of complex interactomes has become embedded in systems biology. If you would like to see his logic, you can read the paper cited below. What I proposed is that it might be an interesting exercise to see how well the complexity calculation predicts our perception of animal intelligence, so I challenged readers to use their intuition to put a set of mammalian species into order from most to least intelligent.

Ten readers immediately replied, which was sufficient for our purposes. If you would like to see all ten lists, they are in the Comments at the end of the earlier column. I put together a consensus list simply by adding up the value of the placements, then putting the animals in order from lowest to highest totals. Here is the consensus list and totals for each animal:.

Now I will present several other rankings that are based on the variables we need to use in the calculation. This is followed by a ranked list calculated from the complexity formula itself, and finally a list which was normalized to take into account a third variable called encephalization quotient which I will explain later. We will compare that list to the consensus list to see how well the formula fits our expectations, and then pose a question for discussion.

One thing to make clear is that we will take Z to be a constant for all the mammalian species. In simpler organisms Z is much smaller. The first list is ranked according to brain weight, and of course the elephant comes out on top, with humans and dolphins tied for second.

This list includes a rhesus monkey which I forget to include in my earlier column :. Again, humans and elephants are close due to the fact that they have the same number of neurons:. Humans, with the highest EQ of all 7.

We can use relative EQ to correct for the effect of body size by normalizing against the human EQ. The complexity equation then becomes:. The consensus list and the calculated list are very similar, with no animal farther away than a single rank inversion between the two lists. What does it all mean? I have a couple of suggestions. The first is that a certain level of complexity is required for higher nervous functions, just as my Mac iBook is much more complex than the Apple IIe I purchased back in It is interesting that all five animals with complexity values of 63 and above are self-aware, at least according to the following test.

If you glue a round red dot to the forehead of a chimpanzee or a dolphin, as demonstrated by Lori Marino and let the animal see itself in a mirror, it will react to the presence of the dot.

All animals with complexity of 57 and below are unable to understand that the image in the mirror is in fact themselves, and they pay no attention to the dot.

The second point is that a chimpanzee, although self-aware, cannot come close to what we recognize as human intelligence. It seems that a complexity value of 70 or above is essential, that is, 11 billion neurons, each with connections to other neurons, and an EQ of 7.

A caveat: I am not a neurobiologist, and am uncritically taking all of the parameters used in the calculation out of the literature. If you read the literature, you can probably find more sophisticated theories of the relationship between neuroanatomy and self-awareness, intelligence and the conscious state.

Now, for those readers who enjoy Scientific Blogging, here is the question: Is there a minimal complexity required for the phenomena of self-awareness and consciousness? If so, how can we arrive at a quantitative estimate of that complexity? My research focuses on a variety of topics related to membrane biophysics, including the origin of cell membranes and the use of transmembrane.
