The AC power adapter type cannot be determined. The system can only boot with a W power adapter or greater. Strike the F1 key to shutdown. To resolve this issue, try to reseat the power adapter. This message occurs when the AC adapter is fully and properly inserted, and it is the Dell AC adapter that came with my laptop. Is there anything I can do possibly a registry hack to force the computer to boot instead of displaying this message? After it gives me this message and I'm forced to press F1 to shut it down, it takes an extremely long time to get through the "Dell" screen on the ensuing boot 1 minute or so.

My battery holds so little charge that when this happens, I have to power the laptop on while it's plugged in, unplug it when the progress bar on the "Dell" screen has completed, then plug it back in when the "Windows" screen appears.

Go to Solution. I used to have that problem until it just stopped working. Fact of the matter is Dell power bricks are designed to break from normal use. The cable for the tiny pin in the middle is broken inside the brick and is not easily fixed you would have to bust open the brick. Horrible design and this officially marks the last Dell machine I will ever buy.

With a registry hack that prevents the check making sure the AC adapter you're using is from Dell to make them more money the power adapter is perfectly capable. Mine came with the laptop when purchased and the power adapter cannot be recognized by mine or my brothers laptop. Now my computer recognizes my brother's cable but here's the catch: His cable puts less current than mine and this can seriously damage my machine. So when Dell says this is a 'safety feature', it's complete bull.

If it was, it wouldn't allow my brothers cable to go into my machine. Nice one Dell, you lost a customer and I will make sure that everyone I speak to in search of a new laptop does not purchase your junk.

I'm currently waiting on a replacement power brick that I ordered off ebay so I can charge my laptop again. I am not throwing accusations at Dell for designing the brick to fail, I am going off many posts from electrical engineers who experienced the same frustrations and took it upon themselves to expose this scam.

I did a hard reset on the battery and that worked. Now, it has happened again. I tried the regular battery reset, but that did not work. I tried uninstalling device and reinstall. I am not sure why this worked. Maybe some techy out there may know. When I tried the battery reset, I turned the computer off before taking out the battery.

Then took it out. Plugged in laptop with power cord and powered it. Then shut down and placed battery in. I turned back on. It may have to do with having the laptop already on when taking out the battery, or placing back the power cord, or could just be the wiping the battery with cloth????

When you turn on the laptop the BIOS program on the mainboard tries to identify the charger via special control wire.

To check if the power adapter is properly recognized press function-key "F2" at powerup. That takes you to the BIOS screen where you can find the information. There have been multiple different revisions of the ATX power supply standard over the years, but they all share the same basic form factor. So a pile of ATX supplies will probably feature in the lives of quite a few readers. ATX power supplies follow a closely defined standard, so it should come as little surprise that many of them share very similar circuitry inside even if they come from different manufacturers.

The TL is a switched-mode power supply controller designed to work in a variety of configurations and manufactured by multiple semiconductor companies. The basic operation of a switch-mode power supply is fairly straightforward, and ATX supplies have very few deviations from the norm.

There is a mains rectifier and filter, a pair of high-voltage power transistors that switch the resulting DC at a few tens of kHz into a ferrite-cored transformer whose output is rectified to low voltage DC. The TL samples the output voltage and produces the PWM switching signal which is fed to the bases or gates of the power transistors through a drive transformer.

This makes them suitable targets for the electronic scavenger, as parts can more easily be retrieved intact. Most obvious when dismantling one of these boxes are the metal case, IEC connector, power switch, and fan.

If you look at the components on the PCB, many of them are standard discretes. Toroidal chokes and ferrite bobbins used in filters as well as the various ferrite cored transformers. The transformers are wound for the specific purpose so unless you have the patience to rewind them they may be of little use, but the chokes have more application.

These are not exotic RF ferrites but more utilitarian iron-dust cores, though they still can find plenty of use wherever a choke is required. The semiconductors in an ATX PSU include some specialist components, but there are still alternative applications for them. On the high voltage side are a selection of high-voltage diodes and those switching transistors, all of which are a fertile source of parts if you are hacking together high voltage inverters.

You may also find the various heatsinks to be useful in other projects. The answer is pretty simple: how about using it as a bench power supply? These supplies are not electrically the quietest or best regulated in the world, but they do have the advantage of providing several useful voltage rails at significant current levels.

However, reading of the 1-wire memory chip is being done by the BIOS routine in the laptop after power up, much before the OS gets loaded. The laptop initiates the communication with sequences of pulses and reads the data in between. So, it will not be possible to send the data during that time!

I had to finish the work and needed some power source. Luckily I had a Dell power supply, but unfortuantely the dc jacks where different. Having a look at the power supplies I found out that they are very close in specification. The Dell jack did not fit into the Lenovo socket.

While you work on such power supplies, even if this is low voltage dc, there is high current. Shortening the dc jack may lead to demage of the power supply and can even cause fire because of generating heat. Be careful, double check every step.

Also the power that both power supplies are able to spend is nearly the same. Polarity of the pins is also the same. When looking for the connector type of both power supplies I was not able to find a standard describing them. It seems to me that Dell and Lenovo are using their own connector design.

Both connectors are built the same way. They are using a techniqe that can handle relatively high dc voltage and current at the same time.

The plug is built by two metal tubes that are separated by insulation matterial. The pipes offer big surface to conduct. There is a small pin in the center of the jack.

I think that this pin has no meaning for the electrical functinality of the connection. I think it is just a guiding pin with no electrical connection. The socket is mainly built out of plastics, to support the jack. Inside the socket there are small clips that conduct to the tubes when the jack is plugged in.

There are two clips for each tube to offer the best conduction possible. One pair of clips conduct to the inner tube the other pair to the outer tube.

The idea is to widen the jack of the Dell power supply a little to make it fit into the socket of the Lenovo notebook. I made small slit into the jack's tubes. This way they became somehow flexible like a strong spring. To cut the slit I used a Dremel tool. The slit need to be cut all the way down the tubing. It need to end some millimeters inside the base of the jack.

Be careful not to cut the guiding pin. After cutting the slit needs to be cleaned somehow. Some chips may be left from the cutting. Google searches seem to reveal this has to do with Dell not making it laptops tolerant of anything non-Dell.

By the way the actual battery charger is inside the computer. If the laptop can not read the chip it will not charge the battery.
