Time Owned: 6 to 12 months. We needed to conduct a basic EMC test on a data logging device that we are developing in order to achieve a CE self-certification before we could start to market it. All the sub-modules were already CE certified, so our test could be fairly high-level and we wanted to reduce the costs, so we decided to do it ourselves. We set up a simple test range at a relatively isolated location and completed the tests in a few hours.
Since then, I keep the RSP1A in the shack and use it sometimes to scan the bands or to decode obscure signals. It compares well with my IC in terms of sensitivity and selectivity - which is pretty good going for a unit that is so cheap. It does require a reasonably high specification PC to run successfully. I diagram based e46 electric wire harness diagram it with an HP laptop that was fairly high specification - about five or six years ago - and I do need to pay attention to the sampling rate and decimation settings if I am to avoid audio breakup.
Time Owned: 3 to 6 months. The box is so tiny it gets lost on my radio rack. The only complaint is the crappy SMA connecter but when you have a tiny plastic box not much else will fit. Software is either making this radio or breaking it. If you run Windows the supplied software is fairly easy to set up. If you run Linuxbe prepared for some head scratching as not every distribution is the same and lib requirements will vary by brand. For Linux I found running Gqrx in binary seems to at least get me started.
CubicSDR is an issue. I haven't got around to trying other possibilities. In real radio performance, software defines everything. I can hear almost as well on it as I can with the Kenwood TS which has an outstanding receive section and probably a bit better than the TS which is no slouch on receive.
It's been around a long time and the SDR rig surpasses that. It's a great little rig for those interested in being on the edge of technology. It won't be a boat anchor with lots of knobs but it won't be a 30 dollar Chinese portable either. Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.Forums New posts Search forums.

RSPDuo versus RSPdx with one antenna
I really like the idea of SDR. I see dollar dongles being sold. I also see airspy and SDRplay equipment for considerably more money.
As I'm getting closer to actually buying anything I'd be interested to know if the more expensive equipment has any real advantage over the cheap stuff in my application? One thing I notice whether it's my Uniden scanners or the SDR youtube videos that I watch is that the audio from a digital radio system always sounds terrible.

The SDRPlay customer support also is first rate. They solved an issue I had moving to a new computer promptly and expertly. Easily a five star product given the excellent, free accompanying software SDRUno and the quality of the unit. Use of the RSP2pro for IF panadapter and for laboratory measurements was not done; the R does not have this capability.

No, it doesn't compare to my 24 bit. Neither lets me see really weak signals. I do not use the P3. It is the only piece of Elecraft produced gear that doesn't fit my station architecture. And, the rsp2 can't be used to drive apps like CW Skimmer. I guess what I'm saying is that you need to think about what you are trying to build, long term, and what it takes. The LP-Pan and a good sound card make a good basis for flexibility. However, the maximum you can display, today, is around kHz. And, you may not be able to see deeply into the noise.

Wideband coverage can come at a cost. Both little Airspy SDRs have wooed DXers with their impressive dynamic range and overall ability to work weak signals in the HF portion of the spectrum. But have they succeeded? As I say in most of my SDR reviews: doing comparisons with receivers that have so many features and adjustments is never easy.
In other words, we want an apples-to-apples comparison, but it can be difficult to achieve, especially with new products. The RSPdx is not in full production at time of posting, thus application options are limited. The benefit of using SDRuno is that you unlock the full potential of the RSPdx, plus signal and noise numbers are incredibly accurate.
I also matched filter settings and made an effort to match AGC and volume settings as closely as I could. Is this comparison perfect? Probably not, but I did the best with the time I had available. I do intend to make further comparisons in the future. I clicked on it and quickly discovered it was Medi 1. The signal was faint, but I could clearly ID at least one song. This truly impressed me because I believe this was the first time I had logged Medi 1 on longwave from the shack.
I tried to explore more of the longwave band, but due to local RFI I suspect an appliance in my homemost of the LW band was inundated with noise. With that said, I did grab three of my benchmark non-directional beacons. A major improvement over its predecessor. Note that my horizontal delta loop antenna is omni-directional, hence the tug-of-war you hear between stations in the clips above.
In truth, I could have done more to stabilize the signal on both of these fine SDRs, but I wanted to keep the comparison as fair as possible. You might have noticed that both were running AM sync mode. It seems the sync lock on the RSPdx may have also improved——though I would need to do a direct comparison with the RSP2 to know for sure——but in terms of stability, I still found that the WinRadio Excalibur was superior. And, after having spent two weeks with the RSPdx on the shortwave bands, I would say this is a bit of an understatement.We continue to regularly add video guides to our Youtube Channel.
I have a ThinkBook notebook PC. It has XP with service pack3 installed and is in good performance shape. Seems to accept other USB devices and install and run their software.
I just get the window that is running picking up noise and no signals, can unplug the SDR fob with no difference Before I waste my time with these high end SDRplay devices, has anyone have this problem? Is there some dumb little switch I need to flip in the XP configuration?

Programmable filters. You can change the selectivity from as low as KHz to the full bandwidth of 8 MHz, This is a huge plus for DX-ing if you live in an area with very strong local stations. What is the software support like for both? I use a bunch of programs, but probably SDR is my favorite for simple things.
